The Commonwealth of Virginia is joining a host of other states in launching a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Task Force.

The task force, authorized under Executive Order (EO) 30, will include ten AI experts in the commonwealth, including representatives from Virginia educational institutions, non-profits, and private corporations.

The task force is charged with providing advice to policymakers as they work to make Virginia a leader in the AI space, while also establishing guardrails to ensure responsible use of the technology.

“When I signed my artificial intelligence executive order, I was very clear that while there are amazing opportunities with AI, there are also inherent risks that we must tackle head-on. I am excited to bring together this extraordinary group of leading experts in the AI space,” said Gov. Glenn Youngkin. “Virginia’s world-class universities, companies, and military bases position it to lead the nation in the development of AI. The AI Task Force will play a critical role in ensuring that Virginia stays at the forefront of this rapidly developing industry.”

The governor’s office explained that the Task Force will meet at least twice per year and offer input to both the executive and legislative branches on the Policy Standards, IT Standards, and Education Guidelines issued under EO 30. Additionally, it will provide input on existing and potential uses of AI by state agencies.

“AI promises to enhance the efficiency of state government, provide educators with powerful teaching tools, and enhance the lives of Virginia citizens,” said Office of Regulatory Management Director Reeve Bull. “The AI Task Force will help ensure that Virginia is taking advantage of the extraordinary opportunities associated with the new technology while maintaining sensible guardrails that promote fairness and safety.”
