The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will hold a two-day workshop for Tribal governments, Tribal employees, and Tribal members next month.
The FCC said that this event, hosted by the Lummi Nation, is designed to provide information that will help Tribal Nations identify and evaluate opportunities to develop more robust broadband infrastructure and services in their communities. The in-person workshop is also designed to provide information about FCC policies and programs to address the lack of adequate communications services on Tribal lands nationwide.
At the workshop, FCC says its staff will provide presentations on a broad range of important FCC initiatives that support the deployment of communications infrastructure and services in Tribal communities. The initiatives covered will include Broadband Data Collection, Affordable Connectivity Program, and Universal Service Fund Schools and Libraries Program.
In a press release, the FCC said stronger communication infrastructure supports Tribal economic development, Tribal schools and libraries, and low-income families, as well as public safety departments, and Tribal government administration. Additionally, the FCC’s Native Nations Communications Task Force (NNCTF) will provide an update on their efforts during the workshop. The FCC says that the event will include a listening session inviting Tribal comment on current FCC initiatives to promote equal access to broadband and eliminate digital discrimination.
According to the FCC’s announcement, Tribal government leaders, Tribal IT managers, government and community planners and managers, Tribal enterprise specialists, and representatives of Tribal social service agencies, schools, and libraries should consider attending this event.
The workshop will occur July 12-13 in Ferndale, Washington. Registration is free and open to individuals holding Tribal affiliations.
