California wants industry’s innovative generative artificial intelligence solutions to help the state combat its housing and homelessness crisis.
Gov. Gavin Newsom has asked software developers to “create and present” AI solutions that will assist the Golden State with its housing crisis. California has the highest levels of unhoused people in the nation.
The AI would be a “portable tool” that local jurisdictions could use for access to treatment and shelter bed availability; data insights that show local permitting and development decisions; and fiscal analyses across state programs including “more efficient policy” development.
“As the birthplace of the tech industry and the fifth largest economy in the world, California isn’t afraid of progress,” Newsom said in a statement. “We’ll deploy every tool to address some of the most vexing issues of our time, including the housing and homelessness crisis.”
Later this month, the state plans to host developers of large language models to conduct market research on how solutions may be developed to address these challenges.
“The innovator community jumped at the chance to partner with the state to explore if GenAI can benefit our residents and our workforce,” said California’s Government Operations Agency Secretary Amy Ton. “This overwhelming response, along with the ongoing work, shows us that we can embrace GenAI’s many opportunities while taking appropriate measures to approach it safely and responsibly.”
