The state of Colorado launched a new QR-based tool to confirm the authenticity of state-issued digital IDs.

The Colorado Digital ID verifier, which is available through the myColorado mobile app, allows ID holders to present a secure QR code from within the app, and the verifying party scans it using their own myColorado app – no separate hardware or login is required.

A successful scan confirms that the credential was issued by the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles through myColorado. If a scan returns “Verification failed,” the state advises requesting a physical driver license, state ID, or passport.

According to Colorado officials, the app is a fraud-reduction measure that preserves privacy. Verifying parties see only the ID holder’s legal name and driver’s license or ID number, helping businesses and agencies authenticate credentials without collecting additional personal data.

“The result is a solution that strengthens trust in digital identity, reduces fraud risk and makes it easier for Coloradans, businesses and government agencies to use the Colorado Digital ID with confidence,” according to the app announcement.

The state also published step-by-step instructions tailored to different users – residents, businesses signed into the app, and those not signed in – along with guidance for frontline staff who routinely check IDs.

On October 30, 2019, Governor Jared Polis issued an executive order recognizing the Colorado Digital ID as a valid form of personal identification within the state. Following this, the Colorado State Patrol began accepting the Digital ID on November 30, 2020, and many local law enforcement agencies across Colorado also recognize it.

However, because the Digital ID is not accepted everywhere, officials advised residents they’re still required to carry their physical driver’s license or state-issued ID card for situations where the digital version may not be recognized.
