Indiana University (IU) reorganized its central IT organization into five divisions focused on artificial intelligence (AI), data, digital services, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and operational efficiency, university technology leadership announced on July 13.

The new University Information Technology Services (UITS) structure is intended to more closely align technology investments with the IU 2030 strategic plan, which centers on student success, research and creativity, and service to Indiana and beyond.

Priorities of the reorganized organization include modern data and integration capabilities, streamlined digital experiences, resilient infrastructure, and simplification and automation. Those capabilities are intended to strengthen support for students, improve partnerships with faculty, and simplify services for employees, according to the university’s announcement.

“We’re multiplying our impact by aligning related services, strengthening collaboration across teams, improving accountability and enabling faster, more integrated decision-making,” said Kendra Ketchum, IU’s vice president for information technology and chief information officer.

Under the restructuring, UITS will operate through Technology Operations, Strategic Services, Academic and AI Innovation, IT Auxiliary Services, and the University Information Security Office.

Technology Operations, led by Chief Technology Officer and Deputy CIO Patrick Phillips, will oversee applications, infrastructure, networks, and support services for teaching, research, and university operations.

Strategic Services, led by Associate Vice President Jenell Bramlage, will manage technology planning, project governance, compliance, and relationships across the university.

Academic and AI Innovation, led by Chief Academic and AI Innovation Officer Anne Leftwich, will combine academic technology support with a university-wide AI agenda. The division’s portfolio includes AI strategy, platforms, governance, trust, partnerships, and literacy.

IT Auxiliary Services, led by Associate Vice President Anthony Newman, will provide specialized services supporting global security operations, research networks, education partnerships, and innovation programs.

The University Information Security Office, led by Chief Information Security Officer Jason Williams, will protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of university systems and information.

The IU strategic plan calls for measurable progress in student opportunity, transformative research, fiscal responsibility, and service to the state. The restructuring positions IT as a direct contributor to those goals, Ketchum noted.

“Technology is not simply a service we provide; it’s a strategic tool that advances student success, groundbreaking research and even operational excellence across IU,” Ketchum said. “Our new structure is designed to be easier to partner with, faster to innovate, stronger in execution and focused on delivering measurable outcomes for the university.”
